A local walking his dog stopped outside our Slate House project Brighton and said
"Is this your house? It’s a nice house."
“No” we said "this is 14 homes."
He was shocked. That is density by stealth!
Density by stealth is one of the ways our team at Austin Maynard Architects are thoughtfully increasing density. In a wealthy, conservative, and heritage-rich area like Brighton, you expect massive pushback when trying to build multi-residential projects. But if the building is sensitive to the area's materiality and scale? You might just fit right in.
It is all about understanding the area BEFORE you begin designing.
This is an excerpt from Andrew Maynard’s talk the Architecture of Wellbeing, a discussion on the future of housing as part of Geelong Design Week, 3rd of October, hosted by City of Greater Geelong at Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre.
