Ambitious Ideas
Not all ideas make it through council - but it’s great to look back at old models with Andrew Maynard and see echoes of our current projects.
Every project begins with ambitious ideas. In this video, director Andrew Maynard shares an unbuilt concept model for a property split by a public laneway. To respect a heritage-sensitive street front, the design proposed elevating the home over the adjacent laneway - allowing truck access underneath while connecting two properties owned by the same client.
Although local council rejected the proposal, testing spatial ideas through physical 3D models remains central to our practice.
We like to explore outside-the-box before making assumptions about what is possible. Unbuilt ideas frequently resurface – the theme of ‘a little house on top of a house’ from this early model can be seen in our much later Thornbury House apartment project.
As Andrew says ““We’d rather an idea have a chance to exist - than to just assume it won’t work”.
